Supplies for Fabric Origami

Fabric Squares
All you need to get started is a square of fabric—any size will work, as long as it’s square. Your finished box will measure about one-third the size of the fabric you begin with. For example, a 15" fabric square will fold down into a box approximately 5" square.

We curated a limited-edition 8-piece Cloud Dancer Fat Quarter Bundle with fabric origami in mind. Its fresh, clean palette celebrates Cloud Dancer, Pantone’s Color of the Year, making it perfect for beautifully folded boxes that feel light, modern, and timeless.

Getting Started

Protected Surface
Start by setting up a protected work surface. We used baking sheets, but freezer paper works just as well—just be sure to place it shiny side up.
Cut Sizes
To make one box with a lid, you’ll need two fabric squares:
One square for the bottom of the box
One square for the lid, cut ½" larger than the bottom piece
For example, if your box base is cut at 15" square, the lid fabric should be 15½" square.
Optional Lining
If you’d like to add an accent fabric to line the inside bottom of the box and the inside top of the lid, plan ahead for sizing.
The finished box will be approximately ⅓ the size of your original fabric square.
Cut lining squares about 1" larger than that estimated finished size. You'll trim it to size later.
Stiffen, Press, Trim, Fold
Stiffen
SpraynBond Fabric Stiffener can be sprayed directly onto fabric; however, our preferred method is to brush it on. Fully saturate the fabric, and you’ll be amazed at how paper-like it feels once dry. Leave the saturated fabric in place on a protected surface and allow it to dry overnight.
SpraynBond Fabric Stiffener washes out easily—even after it has fully dried. Simply toss your stiffened fabric into the washing machine, and it returns to its original soft state! This makes fabric origami boxes especially gift-friendly: fill them with stitching supplies or special treats, then let the recipient know the fabric can be washed and reused for a new creative project. So clever!

Press
Once your fabric has dried completely, it can be ironed. Cover the fabric with parchment paper while pressing.

Trim
Your fabric may have warped and shrunk slightly, so trim each piece to ensure it’s perfectly square. Just be sure the fabric for the box lid remains a half inch larger than the fabric for the box base.

Fold
