The History of Folk-Art

Folk-art has always belonged to the people.
Rooted in tradition and passed down through generations, folk-art emerged from everyday life—created not by formally trained artists, but by makers expressing their stories, culture, and surroundings. It’s defined by bold colors, symbolic motifs, storytelling, and—perhaps most importantly—an embrace of imperfection. Every stitch, shape, and design is meaningful, not perfect.

Sue Spargo draws deeply from these traditions. Birds, flowers, animals, and whimsical motifs appear in her quilts—but she elevates folk-art with rich texture, layered wool appliqué, and intricate embroidery. Her work honors the past while pushing it forward, transforming familiar folk motifs into dimensional, tactile art.
Like historic folk-art, Sue’s pieces invite participation. They celebrate creativity, handwork, and storytelling—reminding us that meaningful art is made with heart, not perfection.
