How to Applique Flowers

One way to appliqué ribbon flowers is to whipstitch around the edge of the flower. You can pin your flower with small appliqué pins or just hold it in place as you stitch. Bring your needle up from the back, catching the ribbon flower close to the outer edge, and then begin your whipstitch. Try to place your whipstitches in the spaces between the loops on the outer edge of the flower to avoid warping them. This method will create a flower that is flat around the outer edges and raised in the middle. They will look like small yo-yo's!

You can create a three-dimensional flower effect by tacking the ribbon flowers closer to the center. Bring your needle up from the back and add a straight stitch into the "valleys" of the petals to hide the appliqué thread. Stitch around the center of the flower until it is tacked down.
Extra Embellishment Ideas

Add Drizzle Stitches (pg. 100 of Creative Stitching) to the center of the Ombre Ribbon Flowers for even more dimensional appeal.

Cast On Bullion Knots (pg. 164), Bullion Knots (pg. 92), and Bullion Loops (pg. 94) around the flowers can frame them nicely, without taking too much away from the flower!

Add French Knots (pg. 104) or Colonial Knots (pg. 53) to the center of the flowers for extra texture. Small Drizzle Stitches also look great in the center!
