As you could probably tell from the fact that we dye our own, we LOVE velvet! That's why we've been playing around with ways to make it even more textured and interesting to really add some pizzazz to projects. We thought we'd share the love and show you how to emboss and appliqué velvet. This week we'll be focusing on the embossing part, and next week we'll dive into appliqué. It's so much easier than it sounds, and it's really fun too!
Supplies
- Velvet
- Rubber Stamps
- Iron or Mini Iron
- Ironing board or Pressing Mat
- 8ml Spray Bottle with water
- Optional: Perfect Circles and Perfect Leaves
Place your stamp on your ironing board or mat with the rubber side up.
Lay your velvet across the stamp, right side down. Using your 8ml Spray Bottle, spray the velvet with a fine mist of water until damp.
TIP: To get a perfect, shiny image, make sure your rubber stamp is clean and free from any ink. If there's ink on your stamp, it will transfer to your velvet!
Place your hot, dry, iron on top of the velvet, avoiding steam holes, for a few seconds. Allow the velvet to "grab" the stamp to prevent the image from blurring. You may need to lift and press the iron multiple times and in multiple places, depending on the size of your stamp and the size and weight of your iron. When you lift the iron off, you should be able to see the design of your stamp on the back side of the velvet. Using the tip of the iron, gently move back and forth over any areas where the design looks faint.
Once your image is pretty clearly visible on the back of the velvet, remove the velvet from the stamp, and voila! You have a beautiful, textured image to vamp up any project.
Always exploring and experimenting, we came up with a fun variation to the polka dot embossing. We laid down Perfect Circles and Perfect Leaves on the Polka Dot Rubber Stamp to create a beautiful and unique embossed pattern.
