With a focus on research and development, Kearing has become a world leader in the creation of innovative products informed by science. We are thrilled to now carry Kearing Air and Water Erasable Pens and the revolutionary Kearing Hot Ironing Rulers and Templates!
Water and Air Erasable Pens
These erasable pens are perfect for temporary marking in sewing, quilting, embroidery or craft projects! The Water Erasable Pen comes in blue and white and the Air Erasable Pen comes in violet and pink.
We put these pens through some testing of our own and were thrilled with how they performed on our Hand Dyed Wool!
All that's needed is one thin swipe of each pen for an easy-to-see-line.
NOTE: The white Water Erasable Pen appears to go on clear at first, but will turn white within a few seconds of application.
We highly recommend having a Fabric Folding Pen handy. Fill it with water and simply give it a little squeeze while you run the felt tip over your water erasable pen lines.
Heat & Cold Test
Once the lines were removed, we wanted to make sure they wouldn't reappear with prolonged exposure to heat or cold. We made one sample to test exposure to extreme heat, and another sample to test exposure to extreme cold.
We really put these pens to the test with a good hot ironing of the wool sample. We then left the sample sit for a day on a car dashboard during a heat wave when it was sunny and temps were close to 100°F! And good news - none of our marks reappeared!
We left the other sample in the freezer overnight, and it was also a success - no reappearing marks!
Hot Ironing Rulers and Templates
Inspired by astronaut helmets, the Kearing Hot Ironing Rulers and Templates are revolutionary! Seriously, they are the best thing since sliced bread! They are transparent, non-slip, super thin, yet resilient and flexible, and they withstand temps up to 428°F and short term ironing up to 536°F!

NOTE: All straight edge shapes will work similarly.
We whipped up these shapes in no time using Jen Kingwell's Mixed Bag of Lollies Fabric. They are ready for applique or hand piecing!
We created this hand pieced hexagon by starting with the triangle template. The triangles are made to fit perfectly within the hexagon template.
How fun would it be to create a pieced hexagon quilt with some of the hexis made of pieced triangles!
Circles the Sue Spargo Way
Trace around the circle template on the backside of your fabric. Cut out the traced circle leaving a half inch seam allowance.
Using a #11 Short Darner and Efina Cotton Thread, bring the needle through to the backside of the fabric in the middle of the seam allowance. Make a running stitch all the way around the circle. Be sure to cut your thread long enough to reach all the way around.
Once you've stitched all the way around the circle, begin pulling on the thread to cinch the fabric around the template.
Run a Fabric Folding Pen filled with Flatter along the outside edge of the circle for a beautifully crisp edge, and press with an iron.
Place a clapper over the circle while it cools. Once it has cooled, carefully remove the template.
Gently pull the thread to reform the circle, and press it with an iron. Now you have a perfect circle ready for applique!
