Since ancient times, wool has been valued as highly efficient, unrivaled by any other fiber created by science. Learn about the exceptional qualities of wool, and why Sue Spargo Hand Dyed Wool is the absolute best there is!

From the International Wool Textile Organization, here are ten fantastic reasons why wool matters:

  1. Pure wool is 100% natural, 100% renewable, 100% sustainable, 100% biodegradable. If you love the planet – use more wool!
  2. Wool is warm and cool – it adapts to the wearer!
  3. Wool is flame retardant and will often self-extinguish. Fire-fighters like it because it produces less smoke and toxic fumes – making it a safer choice for the home.
  4. Strong and long lasting – wool carpets and rugs can take lots of heavy wear and are known to look better for longer. Quality always lasts!
  5. Sleep well with a wool bed, pillow, duvet and blanket – scientific tests show that wool will create a sleep climate perfect for you, bringing deeper sleep, lasting comfort and sweet dreams.
  6. Wool has hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial properties – it makes the air that we breathe cleaner and better.
  7. Wrap your babies in wool so they breathe easy – wool will keep them cosy and warm but not too hot as it cleverly changes to their temperature needs and is good for their skin.
  8. Insulate with wool, soundproof with wool, wear it, walk on it, wrap things with it. The world’s oldest renewable fiber is also the most versatile and modern.
  9. Sheep are amazing – they graze peacefully, grow wonderful wool - we use it to make beautiful textiles and the whole process begins again… no depletion, just sustainable and sensible.
  10. Wool is smarter than any other fiber – it travels a long way on its journey from the sheep to finished product but it never loses any of its remarkable qualities and it looks and feels fabulous too.

The Campaign for Wool, led by its Patron, King Charles III, is a global initiative aimed at educating consumers about the exceptional, natural, renewable, and biodegradable qualities of wool in fashion, home decor, and daily living. It is crucial to understand that wool decomposes in soil, enriching the earth with nutrients, and also breaks down in water, ensuring it does not contribute to microfiber and plastic pollution in the oceans. Opting for wool can play a significant role in preserving the planet for generations to come.

We pride ourselves at Sue Spargo for producing the BEST hand dyed wool in the world. Here's what sets us apart:

  1. Our wool is milled in the United States and hand dyed in our Ohio Studio. When you purchase our wool, you are supporting American manufacturing and a family owned business.
  2. Our base wool is a hefty 13 oz, 100% wool, whereas many other wools on the market are much thinner at 9 - 11 oz and often composed of blends. Our wool has the perfect weight, substantial, yet not too heavy for achieving dimensional appliqué.
  3. Our ever-growing line includes over 100 colors of hand dyed wool. We offer them in solid, sparkle, and a number of unique textures - again, all American milled wools!
  4. Our wool appliqué thread and wool are dyed to seamlessly match one another for a perfect blend, effectively making the appliqué stitches invisible so that your embroidery stitches can shine!
  5. We painstakingly hand dye every batch to fully saturate it with color. Our dyeing process penetrates through the center of the fabric, unlike other wools where the dye isn’t properly set, causing unsightly mottling and a noticeable white interior when cut.
  6. We spent several months on prototyping with our mill, working with them to create a very special fabric, which not only takes dye beautifully, but has a soft hand and retains a solid cut or ripped edge with minimal fraying for clean and easy appliqué.
  7. We think attention to detail is paramount when purveying such high quality wool fabric. We feel an inherent responsibility to provide an exceptional product; you will never receive a piece of wool from our studio with wrinkles. Often other wools will have visible creases; these permanent flaws are heat set wrinkles, irreversible defects that no amount of ironing will ever correct. If you see something advertised with wrinkles… it's likely what you’re going to get!
  8. We are so proud to tell you we have virtually ZERO waste in our wool production. Due to our abilities to repurpose and recycle our wool fabrics we divert what many companies might call trash into a number of different products and nonprofit programs. Our unused selvedges are regularly donated to be used as fill for dog beds at a local nonprofit.
  9. We are always open to talking with customers about special dye requests, whether you are looking for a specific size or a special color. We cannot always accommodate every request, but we do our very best to please!
  10. Satisfaction Guarantee. We take the utmost pride in our products, our wool being the closest to our heart. If for any reason you are unsatisfied, we are here to listen. Please reach out to us to give us the opportunity to make it right for you!
