Traditional Hand Quilting
Traditional hand quilting is such a relaxing and rewarding way to to slow down and connect deeply with your work, and is a great technique to master. In this workshop, Tonye B. Phillips will guide you through the art of old-fashioned hand quilting — not the modern "big stitch" style, but the fine, delicate stitching that has been passed down through generations.
Whether you want to hand quilt an entire piece or simply add special touches to complement machine quilting, you’ll come away from this workshop with practical skills, helpful tips, and a deeper appreciation for the quiet joy of quilting by hand.

Meet the instructor!
Tonye Belinda Phillips was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, where she inherited a love of handwork from her mother. Early on, she explored embroidery, cross-stitch, knitting, and sewing - but it was in 1992 that she discovered her true creative passion: quilting. Now based in a tiny mountain resort town, Camp Sherman, Oregon, Tonye teaches quilting classes at the Stitchin' Post in Sisters, Oregon.
Whether teaching, stitching, or simply soaking in the beauty of the world around her, Tonye finds endless inspiration in fabric, nature, and the creative community she’s built through quilting. Millions of stitches later, she still loves to do most of her sewing by hand.
Please bring the following supplies to class:
- (x2) 20" squares of light weight muslin (pre-washed)
- (x1) 20" square cotton batting (we like Quilter's Dream "Request")
Please layer and baste these pieces together (ie. muslin/batting/muslin then baste together using thread like you would a quilt)
- #10 Big Eye Quilting Needles (Richard Hemming or any brand - you'll want something short and stout)
- YLI Glazed Cotton Quilting Thread (this thread is a bit thicker and stiffer than regular sewing threads)
- Small embroidery scissors
- Thimble
- If you are not used to wearing a thimble, please find a good metal thimble that fits your middle finger (prominent hand) snuggly but not too tight. Wear it around the house as many times as you can to get used to it.
- 14" wooden circular hoop (approx. 1" deep)
- Masking tape for marking lines
- Pencil, chalk pencil and ruler for marking lines
- Bagged lunch
Items will be available for purchase during class so no worries if you do not have everything on this list!
