Shibori & Indigo Dyeing Beyond Tie Dye
with Debbie Maddy
Debbie will set up and maintain multiple organic indigo vats for our dyeing sessions. We’ll explore in depth the stitching techniques that resist dye, and she’ll guide you through the classic folding, clamping, and tying methods used in shibori indigo dyeing. This isn’t your typical indigo experience — we’ll go far beyond the basics — yet the class is open to all skill levels. Debbie will have the vats ready to use and will also demonstrate how to prepare your own, for anyone interested in learning the full process. All vats will be natural and organic.
Meet the instructor!
Debbie’s most recent endeavors have been in the world of fabric and fiber dyeing of all kinds, but most specifically Shibori and Indigo dyeing. She has authored a book about shibori. Debbie has studied under some of the most prestigious artists in the US, Japan and England. She loves traveling to teach and speak for guilds and shops around the country. She dyes and sells items to wear and decorate with and is thrilled and honored to be a part of the Moda Fabrics designer family.
Please bring the following supplies to class:
- Apron Rubber gloves (long kitchen type), we will provide disposable
- Wear old clothes and shoes that you don’t mind being blue
- Thimble if you use one
- Scarves, fabrics, and other items will be available for sale at the class or in advance. If you are bringing things from home you will need to prepare them for dyeing. Instructions for scouring will be provided to students closer to the class date.
*Please remember that there will be multiple people dyeing, so we cannot do very large pieces of fabric or too many articles of clothing for each person.*
Provided Supplies:
- Everything to make and maintain the indigo vats
- All items necessary to do all of the techniques learned in class.
- Clamps, poles, rope, string, needles, threads etc.
- Each student will receive 2 meters of Japanese Yukata fabric or one silk scarf.
This event is held in-person in our Ohio Studio located at 3792 Boettler Oaks Dr. Green, OH 44685.
Lunches will be provided each day of the workshop, as well as morning and afternoon refreshments, coffee, tea, and use of our fridge and kitchen. Please let us know if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate!
Supplies are available for purchase in store during class if not purchased ahead of time.

Cancellation fees reflect the cost of registration, staff, instructor contracts, material acquisitions, and other services. This policy applies to all registrants, regardless of the reason for canceling. We encourage you to take our cancellation policies into consideration before registering for classes.
If you need to cancel your registration, you have the following options:
Transfer:
Registrants who cancel their enrollment in a workshop held in our Ohio studio may make a one-time transfer to any other workshop held in our studio.
- Transfers may be made either in the current workshop season, or any workshop in the following year. Transfers must be made more than 30 days prior to the workshop, and are subject to a 5% cancellation fee.
Refund:
If you prefer not to transfer your workshop registration, the following fees apply:
- More than 60 days prior to the workshop, refund of your deposit minus a 20% cancellation fee.
- Less than 60 days prior to the workshop, no refunds will be issued.
Redirect:
Registrants are able to send someone in their place into the workshop for no additional fee. In this case, no refunds will be issued, payment arrangements are the responsibility of the original registrant if needed.
