Modern Art Coasters
Create a set of fun Modern Art Coasters
inspired by artist, Frank Stella!
Frank Stella became famous in the 1960s for his minimalist, hard-edge paintings of abstract, colorful stripes and shapes. Frank never shied away from taking risks or trying a new creative direction, as the simplicity of the formal qualities in art, such as color and shape, excited him.
In the 1970s, Frank Stella's work took a drastic turn, breaking free from previous minimalist restraints. This new maximalist work embraced wild, organic shapes, contrasting texture and pattern, and loose painterly brushstrokes. Stella even began experimenting with low-relief sculpture, as some of his paintings became 3-dimensional with layers of painted cardboard and aluminum.
Join us in this creative workshop as we experiment with color and organic shapes to create a set of four scrappy coasters, inspired by Frank Stella's maximalist style artwork.
In this class, you will:
- Get inspired by famous artist, Frank Stella, and learn how his artwork has changed and developed throughout his career
- Experiment with color, shape, and texture to design a set of four scrappy coasters
- Use a sewing machine to sew organic lines
- Add a few simple embroidery stitches to finish your design or experiment with a raw-edged look
