Learn machine quilting basics and beyond!

Turn your quilt tops into finished projects using a domestic machine! Discover a variety of ways to finish your quilts, using both walking foot and free motion quilting, or a combination of the two! This class will have something for everyone, from hesitant beginners to those with more miles on the clock, finish with the confidence to machine quilt your projects at home!

In this class, you will:
  • Begin with the basics of preparing your quilt top, find out why pressing matters and how Catherine likes to baste her quilts
  • Get to know the walking foot, make stitched samples of different styles including matchstick quilting, grids, combined stitches and serpentines
  • Elevate your technique with beautiful organic curves, learn how to execute sharp turns and make accurate straight line polygon spirals and circular spirals
  • Experiment with free motion quilting using Catherine's no-fuss steps for success, then use your skills to combine walking foot and free motion quilting
  • Add hand stitching or contrasting threads for maximum impact
  • Get inspired from a plethora of samples, get advice and consider possibilities for quilting your current projects with fellow students

Meet Catherine!

Catherine Redford was born in England where she learned to
knit and sew as a young girl. After relocating from London to Naperville, Illinois, she learned to quilt and never looked back. She's an award winning quilter, an active member of her local guilds, and a popular teacher at the local and national level. Catherine is a published author and frequent magazine contributor, and has enjoyed being the guest on Quilting Arts
TV and TheQuiltShow.com.

Supply List
  • (x20) 10” squares of solid colored fabric
  • (x4) 10” square pieced blocks - or extra solid colored fabrics
  • (x12) 10” squares low loft cotton batting (we love Quilter's Dream Cotton Batting!)
  • White 50 or 60wt cotton thread for quilting (we love Konfetti and Efina!)
  • Colored 12wt cotton thread (we love Spagetti)
  • 1-2 spools of 8wt Eleganza Perle Cotton
  • (x50) safety pins, size 1
  • Small scissors
  • Low tack painter's tape or masking tape
  • 12" ruler
  • Chalk pencil
  • Protractor
  • Sewing machine with walking foot, open toed applique foot, and darning foot for free motion quilting (if your machine had an integrated dual feed system or similar, you do not need a walking foot)
    • If you have it, be sure to bring your extension table, knee lift and instruction manual. Don't forget your pedal and power cord!
  • #80 sharp (Microtex) and #100 topstitch sewing machine needles
  • #24 Chenille needle
  • Pen and paper for note-taking
  • Hold It Precision Stiletto Tool (optional)
  • Kwik Klip Safety Pin Fastener (optional)

Cancellation Policy for Classes and Events

Cancellation fees reflect the cost of registration, staff, instructor contracts, material acquisitions, and other services. This policy applies to all registrants, regardless of the reason for canceling. We encourage you to take our cancellation policies into consideration before registering for classes.

If you need to cancel your registration, you have the following options:

Transfer:

Registrants who cancel their enrollment in a workshop held in our Ohio studio may make a one-time transfer to any other workshop held in our studio.

  • Transfers may be made either in the current workshop season, or any workshop in the following year. Transfers must be made more than 30 days prior to the workshop.

Refund:

If you prefer not to transfer your workshop registration, the following fees apply:

  • More than 60 days prior to the workshop, refund of your deposit minus a 20% cancellation fee.
  • Less than 60 days prior to the workshop, no refunds will be issued.

Redirect:

Registrants are able to send someone in their place into the workshop for no additional fee. In this case, no refunds will be issued, payment arrangements are the responsibility of the original registrant if needed

Class is held in our Ohio Studio located at 3755 Boettler Oaks Dr, Suite B, Uniontown, OH 44685. Class is held from 9am to 4pm, Thursday, June 6 through Friday, June 7. 

Lunches will not be provided during this workshop. Please bring a bagged lunch, or we will have a lunch option available during class for an additional cost. Coffee, tea and other refreshments will be provided, please let us know if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions.  

Supplies are available for purchase in-store during class if not purchased ahead of time.
