Learn the traditional art of Kawandi quilting!

Document the memories and special events of life with stitches. From start to finish this is a complete hand stitching project. During this workshop we will focus on being spontaneous while selecting scraps and learning to personalize simple patchwork by using colors and fabric of your life. Sujata will share how to find rhythm between your mind and body to practice mindful stitching.

During this five day workshop, you will learn the element of design in Kawandi and the background of people who originally inspired this art form. Sujata will also share her personal experiences of growing up in India and life after moving to the United States as a colorist and designer.

Meet the instructor!

Sujata Shah is an award-winning quilter and designer and author of Cultural Fusion Quilts. She finds inspiration in the rich handmade tradition of her home country, India; the quilts of Gee’s Bend; Indian and American utilitarian quilts and African textiles.

Drawn to imperfections and irregularities of handmade crafts, Sujata believes each quilt has personality of the maker. Using imperfections as design element has led her to abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks. She finds hand stitching therapeutic and nourishing to the soul, ultimately helping her write personal stories in stitches.

Join Sujata as she shares her quilts and talks about her daily life as a quilter. How somewhere during the making of each quilt, whether it is the fabric selection, constructing the quilt top or finishing the quilt by hand, she ends up writing stories in Stitches.

  • Neutral color thread for basting
  • Fabric scissors
  • Thimble
  • Needle puller or rubber thimble (optional)
  • Bohin #7 Darners, #26 Chenille or embroidery needles of your choice
  • 12wt cotton thread in white or ecru
  • 22" x 22" piece of lightweight fabric for backing
  • 21" x 21" piece of thin cotton batting (Quilter's Dream Request) or loosely woven fabric
  • Assorted scraps measuring approximately 2" square to the size of your hand, and strips measuring 1" to 4" wide

To make this process interesting and engaging, please include many different sizes, colors, and textures in your scrap selections. Lightweight fabrics make it easier to stitch through multiple layers. Be sure to add some shot cottons, plaid, prints and stripes to the mix, as well as a scrap from a personal clothing item. Batiks or heavy weight fabrics do not work well for this project.
