Free Motion Quilting: Steps to Success
1-Day Studio Class with Catherine Redford
Discover the magic of free motion quilting!
A machine quilting class for all skill levels. Learn how to finish your quilts on a domestic machine and discover the magic of free motion quilting. Learn Catherine's tips & tricks for quilting your own projects, and spend time experimenting in a relaxed, no criticism allowed setting. This class is designed to give the beginning or hesitant machine quilter a confidence boost, ready to return home and practice.
In this class, you will:
- Begin with the basics of preparing your quilt top, find out why pressing matters and how Catherine likes to baste her quilts
- Draw your patterns on paper before practicing on pre-made quilt sandwiches
- Experiment with lots of different filler designs and feather variations
- Get creative in a relaxed, no criticism setting, and discover your favorite free motion designs
- Get inspired from a plethora of samples, get advice and consider possibilities for quilting your current projects with fellow students.
Meet the instructor!
Catherine Redford was born in England where she learned to knit and sew as a young girl. After relocating from London to Naperville, Illinois, she learned to quilt and never looked back. She's an award winning quilter, an active member of her local guilds, and a popular teacher at the local and national level. Catherine is a published author and frequent magazine contributor, and has enjoyed being the guest on Quilting Arts TV and TheQuiltShow.com.
Please bring the following supplies to class:
- (x12) 10" squares of solid colored fabric
- (x6) 10" squares of low loft cotton batting (we love Quilter's Dream Cotton Batting)
- White 50wt or 60wt cotton thread for quilting (we love Konfetti and Efina)
- #80 sharp (Microtex) sewing machine needles
- Sewing machine with darning foot for free motion quilting
- If you have it, be sure to bring your extension table, knee lift and instruction manual. Don't forget your pedal and power cord!
- (x50) safety pins, size 1
- Small scissors
- Chalk pencil
- Pen and paper for note-taking
- Kwik Klip Safety Pin Fastener (optional)
Class is held in our Ohio Studio located at 3755 Boettler Oaks Dr, Suite B, Uniontown, OH 44685.
Lunches will not be provided during this workshop. Please bring a bagged lunch, or we will have a lunch option available during class for an additional cost. Coffee, tea and other refreshments will be provided, please let us know if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions.
Supplies are available for purchase in-store during class if not purchased ahead of time.

Cancellation fees reflect the cost of registration, staff, instructor contracts, material acquisitions, and other services. This policy applies to all registrants, regardless of the reason for canceling. We encourage you to take our cancellation policies into consideration before registering for classes.
If you need to cancel your registration, you have the following options:
Transfer:
Registrants who cancel their enrollment in a workshop held in our Ohio studio may make a one-time transfer to any other workshop held in our studio.
- Transfers may be made either in the current workshop season, or any workshop in the following year. Transfers must be made more than 30 days prior to the workshop, and are subject to a 5% cancellation fee.
Refund:
If you prefer not to transfer your workshop registration, the following fees apply:
- More than 60 days prior to the workshop, refund of your deposit minus a 20% cancellation fee.
- Less than 60 days prior to the workshop, no refunds will be issued.
Redirect:
Registrants are able to send someone in their place into the workshop for no additional fee. In this case, no refunds will be issued, payment arrangements are the responsibility of the original registrant if needed.
