Architectural Quilting
with Sujata Shah
Take your improv quilting skills to the next level by diving deeper into the art of creating dynamic and expressive quilt blocks. The focus will be on adding layers, textures, and line movement to your improv blocks, transforming them into complex, visually striking compositions.
You’ll learn to add depth through layering fabrics, incorporate varied textures, and use lines to guide the viewer’s eye and create movement within each block. We’ll explore ways to play with negative space and unexpected design elements, pushing the boundaries of traditional improv quilting.
By the end of class, you’ll have a series of improv blocks that showcase your skills in layering, texture, and movement—ready to assemble into a quilt or keep as stand-alone art pieces.
Meet the instructor!
Sujata Shah is an award-winning quilter and designer and author of Cultural Fusion Quilts. She finds inspiration in the rich handmade tradition of her home country, India; the quilts of Gee’s Bend; Indian and American utilitarian quilts and African textiles.
Drawn to imperfections and irregularities of handmade crafts, Sujata believes each quilt has personality of the maker. Using imperfections as design element has led her to abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks. She finds hand stitching therapeutic and nourishing to the soul, ultimately helping her write personal stories in stitches.
Join Sujata as she shares her quilts and talks about her daily life as a quilter. How somewhere during the making of each quilt, whether it is the fabric selection, constructing the quilt top or finishing the quilt by hand, she ends up writing stories in Stitches.
