Raw Edge Kawandi Applique
with Sujata Shah
Inspired by the hand-stitched traditions of Kawandi quilts from the Siddi community of India, this workshop brings the spirit of that technique into a fresh, hand-stitched applique process. Using raw-edge scraps, students will learn to layer and secure fabrics in a way that feels organic, improvisational, and richly textural.
The focus of this workshop will be on building vibrant surfaces, embracing irregularities, and celebrating the charm of visible edges. By the end, participants will have explored new ways of composition and texture while creating a piece that carries the spirit of tradition with a contemporary twist.
Meet the instructor!
Sujata Shah is an award-winning quilter and designer and author of Cultural Fusion Quilts. She finds inspiration in the rich handmade tradition of her home country, India; the quilts of Gee’s Bend; Indian and American utilitarian quilts and African textiles.
Drawn to imperfections and irregularities of handmade crafts, Sujata believes each quilt has personality of the maker. Using imperfections as design element has led her to abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks. She finds hand stitching therapeutic and nourishing to the soul, ultimately helping her write personal stories in stitches.
Join Sujata as she shares her quilts and talks about her daily life as a quilter. How somewhere during the making of each quilt, whether it is the fabric selection, constructing the quilt top or finishing the quilt by hand, she ends up writing stories in Stitches.
