Folk art Retreat – The Stitchin’ Post, Sisters OR

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

It is always a stretch as an artist to collaborate with other designers and this last teaching venture was no different. I always love a challenge so my good friend Tonye Belinda Phillips and I decided to design a small round robin quilt each. We started with our own flowerpot central block then mailed it back and forth adding to each other’s until we had completed 3 more rounds. Some borders came easier than others and some were a real challenge. We then presented these ideas for the students to build on as they designed their own piece.

We taught the three day class at the lovely 5 Pines Lodge in Sisters. All our students were enthusiastic learning techniques for cotton and wool appliqué as well as making good fabric choices for design and color then adding a little stitching for texture.
It is always a treat for me to co teach with Tonye as our work is very different in many ways yet our styles really work together. We are just a great team! I love her funking houses and baskets they are fun and her use of fabrics is exceptional.
We will be teaching this class again at Santa Barbara Quilting Retreats in November 2014.

Birmingham Quilt Guild – Alabama

Thursday, November 21st, 2013

I do not teach much in the south and I am sure it is because of my love of hand dyed wool. I think many creative people are missing out on such fun and this was definitely confirmed on my recent trip to Alabama. I taught for such and enthusiastic group of stitches they were all so eager to learn and share their creations.

Both Peggy Rhodes and Julia Wood are members of the guild and took my class. They just wrote a book ‘Quick and Easy Hexie Quilts’. It was so much fun as they shared their technique with many of us in class. Thanks gals for sharing!

My annual trip to Stitch owner by Jocelyn was wonderful. We had repeat students as well as new faces. We all stitched for 3 days on flowers. Many stitches and threads were explored. My friend Melissa went with me and we treated ourselves to a day of playing. Kirsten was teaching a class on knitting with beads so we stayed the extra day to participate. She knits the most amazing bags, it was a real treat to be a part of her class.

Smith Owen – Grand Rapids MI and Quilt Market Houston

Sunday, November 3rd, 2013

I taught two new embellishment class this year at Smith Owen. It was really fun to just stitch as Pam made sure all the appliqué was done ahead of time. We worked with all different stitches and threads bringing our little birds and houses to life. The classes were really relaxed and fun was had by all. I look forward to returning next year keep you eyes out for another twist on wool work.

Melissa, Kelly and I just returned from a Quilt Market in Houston, Texas. As always it was so good to see many of our customers and quilting friends. We offered new hand dyed wool colors, wool threads, perle cottons, silk threads, velvets and a fun new ‘Creative Stitching Classroom’ series for store owners to add to their embellishment and wool sections of their stores as well as their new class schedule.
We also had many lovely meals with my good friend Jen Kingwell and her husband Richard. Jenny and I will be co teaching in August 2014 for Textile Tours on a cruise around the British Isles and a trip to the Birmingham Quilt Show. The link to Deb Roberts website is on the right hand side of my blog. We would love you to join us.
I am sharing a few photos of my favorite booths along with pics of ours.
