For the love of art
In October I was able to spend a day with Melissa, a friend and fellow art lover roaming the great halls of the Philadelphia Art Museum. This is one of my favorite things to do, total art immersion. Looking at art leaves my mind reeling with possibilities and I always come away inspired. Here are slices from a few of the pictures I took, they include the abstract paintings of Mark Rothko, a painting by Paul Klee, the amazing renditions of textiles found in the old religious paintings of Europe, and beautiful glazes found in the ceramics of Persia and Pennsylvania.

Top left is a velvet dyed in earthy greens and reddish browns, top right a solid wool in orange tinted pink. Bottom left is a wool dyed green then flashed with a cobalt blue and last a stripe dyed a greenish blue.

Wallowa Lake
(ONE OF A KIND, ONE TIME, LIMITED QTY.)
In September Pete and I hit the road and ventured down to Wallowa Lake in north eastern Oregon. The drive down was wonderful, the landscape constantly changing. We arrived at our destination and the view from the house we rented was spectacular. A full on view of the whole lake and the amazing glacial berms. A buck visited and settled down behind the house to rest for a couple of days. At the other end of the lake the Kokanee salmon were swimming upstream surrounded by old majestic trees. The osprey were very active and we watched them catching fish. It was a restful and quiet getaway, just what we both needed.

The colors are a buckskin velvet, a grass green luxuriously soft wool with a soft nap, a salmon solid wool and a deeper green plaid wool.

Barcelona
(ONE OF A KIND, ONE TIME, LIMITED QTY.)
A couple of years ago I travelled to Barcelona which had been on my wish list for a long time. I have always been interested in the creative work of the art jewelers, the architects and artists that come from this area. Park Güell which was designed by Antoni Gaudi and built in the years 1900 to 1914 was a must see for me. I travelled with Sue, Cathy, Kelly and my father Mike. I managed to go twice, once with my dad before the others arrived and again with everyone when we went and had a lovely picnic in the park carrying with us some lovely wine and fresh foods from the amazing markets in the city.

There are many wonderful things to look at in the park but the mosaics really stole my heart. On the second visit it started to rain and within minutes the winding benches cleared of the crowds and we were able to get a wonderful view of all the mosaics. There were many colors and so many possible palettes but I chose to focus on the blues and yellows this month.

The fabrics are silk matka in blue, silk velvets in blues, aquas and a touch of green, a wool in blue and heavyweight wool in a gorgeous sunny yellow.

Looking on the Bright Side
This year has been a fairly challenging one for me personally and at the beginning of the summer things stared to fall in place and life felt a bit more normal. Summer finally arrived and I started to do some creative work and then I managed to do the unthinkable. I ran over our black lab mutt called Morgan coming home from the studio one afternoon. He was lying in the shade of my car, something he had never done before. It was a traumatic event and never in my wildest dreams did I ever think this was something I would do. Then three weeks later we had to say farewell to our old lab called Shumba. He was an independent dog with a very strong will and he had a heart of gold with not a mean bone in his body. He loved absolutely everything.
I had originally come up with the name Fierdogge Studio for our workspace since dogs have a strong presence in our lives here but it was beginning to feel like I had misnamed it. I was starting to wonder whether Nodog or 3legdog might be more appropriate but life has a way of working out so I am glad to say the original name still applies. While my golden boy is still gone, Morgan is doing great and while he may limp a bit he still has all four wheels and is pretty much recovered. I have my family to thank for this and I am deeply grateful to my dad who along with Jason and my mom and then with Kelly, helped with all the medical needs which I know were not easy. I also have Aimee to thank for living through another summer visit here where things don't go quite as planned. Thanks to all involved for being there to pick up the pieces when things for me fell apart.
So while life at times feels a little crazy everything else around me keeps going on just as normal. The garden is one of those things. During all this the flowerbeds were filling up with oranges and pinks and the cheerful color seems appropriate. It helps to keep the spirits high and is a reminder to celebrate those we love and lose. As my dear Auntie Jean said before she passed last year, always be happy, never sad. So as a toast to happiness this months colors are just that, heres to looking on the bright side.

On the top left is a heavyweight wool stripe in golds and orange, top right a rosy pink silk charmeuse. Bottom left is a solid wool with yellow and pink tones and lastly a silk velvet in golds and orange.

Here's to life.

(ONE OF A KIND, ONE TIME, LIMITED QTY.)
A few years ago I travelled to Tuscany with Sue, our friend Melissa, Pete and our parents. While we were there Sue, Melissa and I went and explored a sculpture garden. We had a great time together and it remains a very fond memory.
A couple of the sculptures, shown in the top right and bottom left were made of glass. On another vacation I journeyed down the eastern coast and collected a couple of old bottles. Just like metal these glass bottles gained a beautiful patina with age. These are the inspiration for this month.

Top left is a clear blue silk charmeuse, top right is a grey velvet with green highlights, bottom left a warm green wool and bottom right a lovely deep aqua stripe.

Color Stories, by Wendy Morris
Before my husband Pete started helping me in the production dye studio here in the Inland Northwest he worked in a corporate job where one day one of his coworkers brought him a few paper bags filled with iris bulbs.
We had no idea what colors they would be and planted them around the garden. The following spring we waited eagerly to see what each clump would bring.

That was a few years ago and now they are thriving. It has been wonderful to have been given these and soon we too will be digging some up and sharing them with friends and family.
I love the colors we have and the purples range from delicate lilacs to the deepest magenta and blackest of purples. The petals are reminiscent of luxurious velvets. These deep intense and moody colors are my inspiration this month.
We have all experienced different weather this year and for us this spring has taken forever to come around, so late in fact that these iris are still blooming in the garden at the end June.

The fabrics are silk velvet in deep blackened purples, silk organza in violet, a softly textured wool in a magenta tinted purple and a red and blue plaid over dyed in dark purple.

Color Stories, by Wendy Morris
As an artist I love working with all kinds of materials. I spend a lot of my time with cloth in the making of all the hand dyed goods that come out of the studio. I love that it is soft, warming and comforting.
In complete contrast is my love for all things metal. I am always inspired by old weatherbeaten surfaces of every description and they remain one of my favorite things to photograph

In the image above at the top left is a photograph of a new piece of steel and working around clockwise are the photographs of what happens to it over time. In the middle is an old tin ceiling. It was salvaged from a house that was destroyed by fire. I have been saving it to some day incorporate it into a piece of art. When you look closely at these surfaces it is amazing just how many colors exist, from blues to grays, rusty oranges to burnt reds. These are some of my favorite colors to work with.

While dyeing these fabrics I thought about the effects of nature on surfaces, and they have a fair amount of variation. The top left is a textured wool and to the right a solid wool with some speckled dyeing on the surface. Bottom left a silk rayon velvet and to the right a silk charmeuse.

Color Stories, by Wendy Morris
I am writing this on a damp and foggy spring morning and like much of the country our warm sunny days have been few and far between this year. Plants are waking at a snails pace and we have yet to see many blooms. One nice thing about this is that it has given me more time to take note of all the effects winter has had on the plants and there is much beauty to be found in what remains.

Last month I mentioned that I love neutrals and there is so much variation to be found in all those gray and brown tones. I love the red and the hint of orange that still colors some of the rose-hips, the soft browns in the hydrangea blooms and the terra-cotta tones found in the old blooms on the butterfly bush.

This bundle of fabrics is dyed with an undertone of soft brown and flashed with burnt reds and orange. The fabrics are velvet, silk, a wool plaid and a wool solid. All of these have a great variety of color swirling across the surface.

Color Stories, by Wendy Morris - SOLD OUT!
Dye day for this story happened to fall on the first day of spring. The colors I could see out of my window were misty tones of grey and brown and while I love neutrals I was in the mood to dye something a bit more colorful. I decided it was time to hit the archives of photographs from previous years and found these pictures of flowers in my garden that have yet to wake.

I love the purple tones touched with yellow and so I chose to use these two colors as my starting point. Purple meeting yellow.

The fabrics in the middle photograph are silk charmeuse at the top dyed with purple and a touch of yellow. Next is the silk rayon velvet dyed with yellow and purple poured on top. Third is wool with swirling layers of lavender and periwinkle. Last is the silk matka dyed with yellow and a very small addition of purple.

Color Stories, by Wendy Morris - Sold out!
During this time of the year in the inland northwest we can experience enough warming weather to start feeling a hint of the spring to come. By now there is a great sense of anticipation and in some years it feels like a little desperation as well. We do get winter here and have a long spring before the heat arrives in the middle of the year. I was out in the garden the other day when spring seemed so promising, just before the eight inches of snow and the return of bitter cold, when I noticed the iris shoots trying to come back to life. One of my favorite flowers in the spring are the iris blooms and one of them is a glowing cyan tinted yellow. The lichens on the trees have a similar glow to them and this almost fluorescent yellow was the start of my inspiration.

Another one of the things I love to photograph on my travels are old walls covered with layers of paper and paint. The erosion that occurs over time gives so much life and depth to these two dimensional surfaces that they are a work of art unto themselves. In my archives of photographs I found this image of a wall that I took while I was traveling with Sue in Vietnam, the colors so representative of what took place in the dye pots this time. Bright yellow meeting turquoise.

The fabrics are silk charmeuse, silk rayon velvet, silk matka and wool dyed in colors that hold the promise of the coming spring
